Silva Usta: An Artist Exploring the Language of Materials, Cultures and Memory

From Istanbul to Nice, Silva Usta has developed a singular artistic universe shaped by cultural encounters, experimentation and a deep interest in the human experience. Through drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and installations, the French artist of Armenian origin explores themes of identity, memory, women’s rights, freedom and the passage of time. Her exhibition, Femmes en espace décalé, offers an opportunity to discover the richness of her creative world in an unexpected setting in the heart of Nice.

From Istanbul to Nice: A Journey Between Cultures

Born in Istanbul into a family of Armenian origin, Silva Usta spent her childhood and teenage years in Turkey before moving to France at the age of 15. This early experience of displacement and cultural transition would become an important part of her personal and artistic journey.

After arriving in France, she trained as a jewellery maker in Strasbourg, where she developed an appreciation for materials, craftsmanship, precision and the relationship between form and texture.

In 1980, she settled in Nice, a city that would become a lasting home and an important setting for her artistic development. She continued her education at the municipal school of plastic arts, Villa Thiole, where she explored different forms of visual expression and gradually built the foundations of her artistic practice.

Since the early 2000s, Silva Usta has devoted herself entirely to artistic creation, working from her studio in Nice. Her journey reflects a continuous dialogue between cultures, personal memories and artistic experimentation.

Her work cannot be reduced to a single influence or discipline. It is shaped by her experiences, her observations of society and her desire to explore the many ways in which art can express what words sometimes struggle to convey.

An Artistic Universe Beyond Traditional Boundaries

Silva Usta is a multidisciplinary artist whose work moves freely between drawing, painting, collage, mosaic, sculpture, installations and performance.

Rather than following a single artistic technique, she approaches each project as an opportunity to experiment with new materials and forms. Her creative process is driven by curiosity and a desire to push beyond established boundaries.

This freedom of expression gives her work a distinctive identity. Some pieces are built around intricate drawings, while others combine different materials, textures and objects to create compositions that invite viewers to look more closely.

Her artistic practice also reflects a strong interest in the relationship between the physical material and the message it carries. The choice of a particular surface, texture or object is rarely incidental. Each element can become part of a wider narrative.

For Silva Usta, art is not simply about creating an image or an object. It is also about questioning, remembering, transforming and giving visibility to stories that deserve to be heard.

Materials as a Language of Artistic Expression

One of the most distinctive aspects of Silva Usta’s work is her approach to materials.

She uses a wide range of elements, including reclaimed leather, textiles, tulle, glass, rhodoid sheets and repurposed objects. These materials offer different possibilities for artistic exploration and allow her to develop works that combine visual delicacy with a strong physical presence.

Her techniques include drawing directly onto rhodoid, engraving on reclaimed leather, collage and sculptural composition. By working with materials that have already had a previous life, she also introduces questions of transformation, memory and renewal.

Reclaimed materials are particularly interesting in her creative process. Rather than considering them as discarded or secondary elements, she gives them a new purpose and a new artistic identity.

This approach creates a dialogue between the past and the present. A material that once belonged to an everyday object can become part of an artwork carrying a completely different meaning.

Her work therefore encourages viewers to reconsider familiar materials and discover the expressive possibilities hidden within them.

Women at the Heart of Her Artistic Universe

Women occupy a central place in Silva Usta’s artistic universe.

Through her creations, she explores female identity, freedom, dignity and the place of women in society. Her work pays tribute to pioneering women, poets, activists and personalities whose lives and actions have contributed to changing the world.

These figures are not simply subjects for artistic representation. They embody struggles, ideas and experiences that continue to resonate today.

The artist is particularly interested in the relationship between the female body, personal identity and the freedom to exist beyond social expectations.

Her approach is expressed in a powerful statement accompanying the exhibition:

“Le corps des femmes n’est pas un objet de regard. Il est un territoire de mémoire, de désir, de liberté et de création.”

This vision provides an important key to understanding her work. The female body is not presented merely as an aesthetic subject, but as a space carrying personal histories, collective memories, emotions and aspirations.

Through her artistic language, Silva Usta seeks to give women a voice and a presence, while inviting audiences to question the way female identity is represented and perceived.

Memory, Exile and Human Dignity

Beyond the question of women’s rights, Silva Usta’s work addresses broader themes connected to human experience.

Her Armenian heritage and personal history have contributed to her sensitivity towards questions of memory, migration and exile. The memory of the Armenian Genocide is among the subjects that inform her artistic reflection.

Her work explores how individual and collective memories can be transmitted, preserved or transformed over time.

Exile is approached not only as a geographical displacement, but also as an emotional and cultural experience. It can involve the loss of familiar landmarks, the reconstruction of identity and the search for a place in a new environment.

These subjects give her work a dimension that extends beyond autobiography. By connecting personal experience with wider historical and social questions, Silva Usta creates a space for reflection on freedom, human dignity and the importance of remembering.

Her artistic approach does not seek to impose a single interpretation. Instead, it encourages viewers to engage with the works through their own experiences, emotions and perspectives.

An Artistic Practice Rooted in Nice and Open to the World

Nice has played an important role in Silva Usta’s artistic journey. It is the city where she developed her practice, established her studio and continued to explore new forms of expression.

Over the years, her work has been presented in different cultural settings, including Galerie Depardieu, the Musée d’Arts Naïfs de Nice and Galerie Eva Vautier.

Her artistic experience also extends beyond the French Riviera, with exhibitions and events in France, Belgium, Italy and Turkey.

These different encounters have contributed to an artistic practice that remains open to cultural exchange and dialogue.

Although her work is deeply connected to her personal history, it addresses subjects that can resonate with audiences from very different backgrounds. Identity, memory, freedom and the place of women are universal questions that transcend geographical boundaries.

Femmes en espace décalé: An Exhibition in the Heart of Nice

The exhibition Femmes en espace décalé offers an opportunity to discover Silva Usta’s artistic universe in a setting that differs from the traditional gallery environment.

Hosted at Chabada Coiffure, located at 5 rue Martin Seytour in Nice, the exhibition brings contemporary art into an everyday space, creating a meeting point between artistic expression and public life.

The choice of venue also introduces an interesting dimension to the exhibition. Rather than limiting the presentation of art to conventional cultural institutions, the initiative allows visitors to encounter the artist’s work in a more informal and accessible environment.

Through this exhibition, audiences can discover a creative universe in which women, memory, identity and freedom occupy a central place.

Daly: Bringing Art into an Everyday Space

The exhibition is also made possible by the initiative of Daly, the manager of Chabada Coiffure.

By opening her establishment to Silva Usta’s work, she has chosen to give space to artistic expression and create an opportunity for the public to encounter contemporary art outside the usual gallery circuit.

Her initiative reflects a welcoming approach to culture, in which local businesses can become places for artistic discovery and exchange.

Chabada Coiffure thus takes on a role that goes beyond its usual activity. The establishment becomes a temporary exhibition space, allowing clients, visitors and art enthusiasts to discover Silva Usta’s creations in a different setting.

This kind of initiative contributes to the cultural vitality of Nice. It demonstrates how individual initiatives and local businesses can support artists, encourage encounters and make contemporary art more accessible.

By welcoming this exhibition, Daly offers Silva Usta a space in which her work can be seen by a wider audience, while giving the venue a new cultural dimension.

The collaboration between the artist and the establishment illustrates how art can find its place in unexpected locations and become part of everyday life.

An Artistic Vision Defined by Freedom

Silva Usta’s artistic journey is characterised by independence, experimentation and a refusal to be confined to a single medium.

Her work brings together different materials, cultural references and personal experiences to create a visual language that is both intimate and open to the world.

Whether through a drawing on rhodoid, an engraving on reclaimed leather, a collage or a sculptural installation, she explores the relationship between matter, memory and human identity.

At the heart of her practice lies a desire to give visibility to stories, experiences and voices that deserve attention.

With Femmes en espace décalé, Silva Usta invites audiences to discover an artistic universe in which women, freedom, memory and dignity are explored through a personal and multidisciplinary approach.

Presented at Chabada Coiffure thanks to Daly’s initiative, the exhibition also highlights the importance of local spaces that choose to welcome creativity and bring art closer to the public.

Ultimately, Silva Usta’s work reminds us that art is not confined to a particular technique, place or material. It is a living language, capable of connecting cultures, questioning perspectives and transforming the way we look at the world.
